This project is part of the Vision for Cambodia Initiative, which you can read more about at the above link.
Cambodia is a nation where 95% of the population practices Buddhism, and just under 3% identify as Christians. With nearly 18 million people, only about 4,000 are active members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Many young people in the Cambodian Adventist Church have no access to Adventist schools or a Christ-centered education. In public schools, they are taught Buddhist beliefs and elements of communism. Observing the Sabbath often brings challenges and conflict.
Since the fall of the Khmer Rouge in 1979, approximately 135 Adventist churches have been planted across the country. But the challenges remain great—there is widespread poverty, and many children suffer from chronic malnutrition. To make matters worse, there are very few trained teachers.
The Vision
There is an urgent need for 40 elementary schools and 10 boarding academies across Cambodia. While this is a long-term goal, one simple and impactful starting point is the Evening School.
Evening Schools operate for two to three hours, six evenings a week, and offer tutoring, spiritual education, and a nutritious meal each day. They are easy to establish and serve as a vital bridge toward full-time Adventist education, while also reaching local communities with Christ’s love.
Because this project is so new, we estimate that it will cost around $15-$20 a month to sponsor a child to attend an Evening School in Cambodia.
