School Lunch Program
MINISTRY: School Lunch Program
LOCATION: Philippines
TYPE OF MINISTRY: Nutrition for Education
WHO IS BEING HELPED: School Children
MISSIONARIES INVOLVED: Various
SULADS volunteers are faithfully teaching children in the Tawi Tawi islands of the southern Philippines. However, their efforts face a serious challenge: many of the children must fish all night with their parents just to help provide food for their families.
These island communities survive entirely on what they catch from the sea. If no fish are caught one night, the family goes hungry the next day. In this cycle of survival, education often takes a back seat — yet it is the very key to breaking the pattern of poverty for the next generation.
Recognizing this need, the village elders invited Adventist volunteers to teach both their children and the parents. Over the past two years, meaningful change has already taken place. The children are cleaner, happier, and now everyone knows how to read. The elders deeply appreciate the commitment of the SULADS volunteers.
For the past two years, Jesus for Asia has been sponsoring the volunteers’ modest salaries, helping make this transformation possible.
A School Lunch Program would make an even greater impact. By ensuring the children receive a daily meal, they can focus on learning without worrying about where their next meal will come from.
