Evening Schools Bring Hope to Children in Poverty

Lines of people lay across the sidewalks of an Indian street, trying to sleep. Their homes had been destroyed in recent flooding, and they had almost nothing to their names. Yet their biggest concern was getting their children a good education.

This sincere desperation to uplift their kids helped inspire Jesus for Asia to start our Evening School project. More than 15 years later, God has blessed JFA to provide free tutoring, healthy dinners, and spiritual education six days a week to Indian kids at nearly 50 Evening Schools.

JFA Evening Schools has benefitted children from many backgrounds, especially those living in poverty. 

When we met Kumar (shown above), he was in 7th grade. He attends one of our newest Evening Schools. He is one of three siblings. His mother is sick and is unable to work much. His father is an alcoholic who spends all his money on drinking. He often beats Kumar’s mother when there is no food at home, even though he has failed to provide for it. 

Sometimes, the healthy meal served at the Evening School each night is the only food Kumar gets. He loves coming to the Evening School, where he is learning how to sing, be disciplined, and follow Jesus. He requests prayers for his father to stop drinking and take care of his family.

Rubavathi also comes from a family of five. Her house's roof is made of palm fronds and often leaks. Her parents are daily laborers, and when they cannot work, her family does not have enough food.

When the Evening School opened in her village, they asked her mother to be the cook. Rubavathi’s mother accepted the job and brought her children to the Evening School. Rubavathi loves the consistent food she gets from the evening school and all the stories she is learning about Jesus. Although she comes from a Hindu family, she now confidently identifies as a Christian. She has shared stories of Jesus with her family, and they have also started to accept Him.

Evening Schools are a simple and cost-effective ministry with a huge impact. Hundreds more children like Kumar and Rubavathi have received good nutrition from our evening schools. Many have been able to drastically improve their grades at school. Most importantly, they and their families have the opportunity to learn about Jesus and see that he is a Loving, Living, Prayer-Answering God.
