Evening School Cook Comes to Jesus

A cook at one of our Evening Schools in India

Sundal stands over a steaming pot of boiling rice. She methodically checks the water levels in the large vessel and adds logs to stoke the fire underneath.

Sundal starts another dish, this time adding veggies, water, lentils, spices, and of course, plenty of red chiles. She slowly stirs the sambar (a traditional South Indian stew) with a long-handled metal spoon, making sure all the flavors blend harmoniously.

As she cooks, Sundal can hear the children singing. These are the children she is cooking for at a JFA Evening School near her village. For some kids, this will be their only meal of the day. Before she started working at the Evening School, her family did not have enough to eat either, but now, even her small paycheck for this part-time job has helped her family greatly.

Sundal enjoys listening to the children sing as she works. They sing happy songs about Jesus. Like most Indian people, Sundal grew up Hindu. She didn't know Jesus, but as she has learned about Him, she can see that He is the True and Living God. She feels so blessed to hear the children's songs and and prayers.

Her children are students at the Evening School, and she can see that their lives have improved considerably as they no longer have to worry about malnutrition stunting their development.

A year ago, a three-day evangelism series was held in her area. Sundal attended the meetings with her children and her husband. The family was deeply moved by what they learned in these meetings, and Sundal and her teenage son, Vilmaral, decided to get baptized along with eleven others, including both Evening School students and their parents. They are the first Christians in their village.

Please pray for these still-new believers to continue growing in faith and knowledge of Christ Jesus. May many more families in this village come to accept Jesus as their Savior through the ministry of the Evening Schools.

Only $9 a month will enable a child to attend a JFA Evening School and get two hours of tutoring, spiritual education, and a healthy meal six days a week, all for free. For $50 a month, you can become an Evening School Partner and receive special project updates.

Your generous gifts provide food and school supplies for the children, utilities, and salaries for the teachers and cooks. While dedicated Bible Workers, pastors, or Adventist teachers give the spiritual lessons, we do not give religious requirements for the other positions. This provides opportunities to help needy families, and like Sundal, introduce them to Jesus.
