From Addiction to a New Life

When life’s problems and trials overwhelm us, we may wonder if God is still with us and still works in our lives. At these times, considering how His power has worked in the lives of others can be encouraging. For example, Raj, who lives in India, was about to find out if God’s power could change her life and those of her family.

Raj was beginning to despair. Her husband, Ravi, had a pressing drug addiction. Ravi wasted his paychecks buying drugs, forcing Raj to provide for their children alone. To make matters worse, Ravi began selling their things, including coolers and motorcycles, to fund his addiction. Their house also began to deteriorate because they lacked money to repair it.

Then Raj met Ranjeet. Ranjeet is a JFA Bible Worker who was making visits in Raj’s area. After hearing her story, he told her, “Believe in God. God will free your husband from all addictions.” Ranjeet also encouraged Raj to attend the local Seventh-day Adventist church.

Raj grew hopeful, and she began praying to God. She was able to tell Ravi about the church, and they actually began attending together. At the church, both of them learned more about God and the Bible. The truths they heard began to change their lives for the better. Four months later, Ravi was completely free from his drug addiction. Instead of wasting his money on harmful substances, he began providing for his family.

Raj praises God: “[Now] my husband is completely fine…” Ezekiel 11:19 says, “And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh.”

God saved Ravi and Raj out of addiction and despair and gave them new hearts—and a new life. Their story shows that His power can change anyone, no matter how hopeless their condition may seem.

If you feel trapped in an addiction, as Ravi was, or you feel discouraged and depressed, as Raj was, then remember that God has hope and peace for you. He will save anyone who comes to Him. “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out,” (John 6:37).
